Live foliage was bamboo-zled
When Detroit's prestigious Walbridge Aldinger firm began construction
in March 2001, initial plans relied on live bamboo and foliage to
create a lush green oasis in the main lobby. But things changed
when planned skylights were deleted due to value engineering, and
the plan for a live bamboo forest had to be revised. Live bamboo
is environmentally demanding and requires high natural light levels
or supplemental lighting. Additional issues such as drainage, and
the weight of the three-story planter in the lobby made using a
live bamboo forest nearly impossible.
